New curricula...new achievement indicators...new web tools...new expectations for teaching and learning with technology.

Students no longer need to rely on teachers, textbooks and libraries to access the information they need to make decisions or complete assignments. They live in a world of immediate communication where they can find the answers to the questions that intrigue them. As well, the read/write web , also known as Web 2.0 , where individuals have the opportunity to be not merely consumers of information but also producers requires educators to reevaluate the skills that students need to be successful learners and ultimately contributing citizens.

The major changes in the way our students access and use information lead to the question, "in a world radically changed by new and emerging technology what are the skills that will allow our students to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information?"

We can begin to respond to this question by first understanding that a definition of information literacy is a constantly evolving concept.

The Traditional Definition: Still Relevant?

The Association of Colleges and Libraries (2006) defines an information literate citizen as one who is “able to recognize when information is needed and has the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the needed information”.

Within recent years the way that we access information and the tools that we use to process information has changed dramatically. Students no longer need to rely on teachers, textbooks and libraries to access the information they need to make decisions or complete assignments. They live in a world of immediate communication where they can find the answers to the questions that intrigue them. As well, the read/write web, also known as Web 2.0, where individuals have the opportunity to be not merely consumers of information but also producers requires educators to reevaluate the skills that students need to be successful learners and ultimately contributing citizens. The slide presentation below is an excellent introduction to how the new read/write web is changing the tools and the skills students require to find, use and share information in the 21st Century.

Writers, thinkers and educators are attempting to respond to this new information environment by asking the question, "in a world radically changed by new and emerging technology what are the skills that will allow our students to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information?"

Will Richardson (Web-logged) challenged readers to list what our kid's futures will require them to be. A cohort collected the many responses to his question. The list is an ideal way to begin to review the skills that our students require for success in the 21st Century and to begin to craft a new definition of information literacy.

New Definitions

Call them what you will - dispositions, habits of mind , conceptual skills , life-long learning behaviors, high EQ traits - the educational spotlight is turning to abilities that are incredibly important and very tough to quantify. You can hardly turn around without bumping into a set of these things:

New theories of learning such as Connectivism, and revisions of information literacy models, skills and standards including Big 6 , WebQuests, Bloom’s Taxonomy , National Educational Technology Standards (NETS), The Partnership for 21st Century Life and Career Skills and the American Association for School Libraries’ (AASL) Standards for the 21st Century Learner , express the new literacies – the basic foundations that are essential for success in what Thomas Friedman (2005) has called the flat world and Daniel Pink (2006) has coined the conceptual age.

Blooms Revised Taxonomy

Bloom's Revised Taxonomy

In the 1990's, a former student of Bloom, Lorin Anderson, revised and published a revision of the Taxonomy in 2001. A key change is the use of verbs rather than nouns for each of the categories and a rearrangement of the sequence within the taxonomy.

A Whole New Mind

A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink

A whole new mind - book coverA post from Doug Johnson outlines Pink' s thesis in A Whole New Mind and the necessary 'right-brain' senses we need in what Pink calls the Conceptual Age.

Pink acknowledges the outsourcing trend (Asia), as well as two other trends he labels Abundance and Automation. He suggests that readers ask themselves three questions about their jobs:

1. Can someone overseas do it cheaper?
2. Can a computer do it faster?
3. Am I offering something that satisfies the nonmaterial, transcendent desires of an abundant age? (Are you not just making toilet brushes, but toilet brushes that satisfy the user’s aesthetic sensibilities as well?)

As a result of these trends, he believes we are shifting from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age. Successful players in this new economy will increasing be required to develop and use the right-brain abilities of high concept (seeing the larger picture, synthesizing information) and high touch (being empathetic, creating meaning). Happy news, perhaps, for those of us who never were all that good at the left-brain stuff in the first place.

More specifically, he suggests we work toward developing in ourselves (and I hope by implication, our students), six right brain “senses,” to complement our left-brain, analytic skills. He suggests we will need realize the value of:

1. Not just function, but also DESIGN
2. Not just argument, but also STORY.
3. Not just focus, but also SYMPHONY.
4. Not just logic, but also EMPATHY.
5. Not just seriousness, but also PLAY.
6. Not just accumulation, but also MEANING.

Doug Johnson revisits Pink's premise and adds a seventh sense, learning. He then goes to illustrate how schools might emphasis the six - now seven senses.

In the (Feb 2006) issue of School Administrator Daniel Pink interviews Tom Friedman on Education in the ‘Flat World’
According to Friedman,

"the greatest economic competition in the world going forward is not going to be between countries and countries. And it’s not going to be between companies and companies. The greatest economic competition going forward is going to be between you and your own imagination. Your ability to act on your imagination is going to be so decisive in driving your future and the standard of living in your country. So the school, the state, the country that empowers, nurtures, enables imagination among its students and citizens, that’s who’s going to be the winner."

Participatory Culture

Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century,

The Participation Gap — the unequal access to the opportunities, experiences, skills, and knowledge that will prepare youth for full participation in the world of tomorrow

The Transparency Problem — The challenges young people face in learning to see clearly the ways that media shape perceptions of the world.

The Ethics Challenge — The breakdown of traditional forms of professional training and socialization that might prepare young people for their increasingly public roles as media makers and community participants.

The majority of the report addresses 11 "new skills" students need to be fully successful in the social networking environment:

  • Play — the capacity to experiment with one’s surroundings as a form of problem-solving
  • Performance — the ability to adopt alternative identities for the purpose of improvisation and discovery
  • Simulation — the ability to interpret and construct dynamic models of real-world processes
  • Appropriation — the ability to meaningfully sample and remix media content
  • Multitasking — the ability to scan one’s environment and shift focus as needed to salient details.
  • Distributed Cognition — the ability to interact meaningfully with tools that expand mental capacities
  • Collective Intelligence — the ability to pool knowledge and compare notes with others toward a common goal
  • Judgment — the ability to evaluate the reliability and credibility of different information sources
  • Transmedia Navigation — the ability to follow the flow of stories and information across multiple modalities
  • Networking — the ability to search for, synthesize, and disseminate information
  • Negotiation — the ability to travel across diverse communities, discerning and respecting multiple perspectives, and grasping and following alternative norms.

Connectivism

A Learning Theory for a New Age

George Siemens , Associate Director with the Learning Technologies Centre at University of Manitoba and author of Knowing Knowledge , posits a theory that places learning within networks. “Including technology and connection making as learning activities begins to move learning theories into a digital age. We can no longer personally experience and acquire learning that we need to act. We derive our competence from forming connections"

During a Women of the Web 2.0 skypecast Siemens (April 3, 2007) explains connectivism as “learning as network creation” We live in an age in which information becomes impossible to physically manage or hold in our heads. Instead our knowledge, our understandings, our creations are distributed across a system, each contribution becoming a node on the network. The ability to see connections between fields, ideas, patterns and concepts is essential because learning occurs when connections are made between the nodes on the network. Continuous learning happens through the nurturing and maintenance of connections.

Connectivism’s eight principles as described by Seimens, provide a foundation on which we can begin to see learning as more than that which resides in the individual.

  1. Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions.
  2. Learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources.
  3. Learning may reside in non-human appliances.
  4. Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known
  5. Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning.
  6. Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.
  7. Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist-learning activities.
  8. Decision-making is itself a learning process. Choosing what to learn and the meaning of incoming information is seen through the lens of a shifting reality. While there is a right answer now, it may be wrong tomorrow due to alterations in the information climate affecting the decision.

It’s a new era of globalization that gained momentum just a few years ago, when “a global, web-enabled platform,” enabling the “sharing of knowledge and work, irrespective of time, distance, geography and increasingly even language,” started flattening the world and empowering individuals anywhere to become players in the global economy. Beginning the Journey: Beyond Topical Research

As we begin the journey towards an understanding of information literacy and the new learning needs of our students it is important to reflect on how research has typically been done and how we can begin to change our practice.

What Is Topical Research?

In the article Putting An End to Topical Research Jamie McKenzie describes topical research as...

...requiring little thinking and little imagination. It pays few dividends. It does almost nothing to prepare students for the kinds of thinking skills in provincial curricula.

  • Go find out about diabetes. (the dreaded disease report)
  • Go find out about acid rain.
  • Go find out about Montreal. (the city or country report)
  • Go find out about Charles de Gaulle. (biographical reports)
  • Go find out about Virginia Woolf.

These assignments stress collecting rather than interpreting and analyzing. They beg the question, who cares? And indeed who really does - especially our students.

Students struggle with the mountains of information they have found on usually on the web resulting in 'low-grade synthesis what McKenzie calls smushing.

All too often our attempts at providing students with opportunities to explore their own interests or to delve into curriculum content independently requires them to simply collect and compile facts.

The standard report which requires students to simply look up and report facts will not engage them nor provide them with the critical thinking skills required by 21st century learners.

In the blog post, Why Students Want Simplicity and Why it Fails Them When It Comes to Research, the author, a college educator, contemplates,

Students come to our academic institutions after 15 or so years of research methods that may have always worked in their previous simple contexts. I need to know the names of Britanny Spears’ children…I use Google to find the answer. I need to know what year the War of 1812 started…I use Ask.com to find the answer. I need to know the reasons the American Revolution began…I use Wikipedia to find the answer. In these simple contexts there is always a right answer that can be easily obtained. If these strategies have served our students well, what do we think they’ll do when they get their first challenging research assignments?

Avoiding Topical Research: Redesigning Research Assignments and Projects

The following advice from Reintroducing Students to Good Research is well worth keeping in mind when creating research projects for students.

"To design effective research experiences for our students, we need to take into account the depth of their ignorance. Imagine being told you had to contribute a paper to a conference in a field other than your own. How would you know what kinds of research questions would be appropriate? What evidence would be considered authoritative and persuasive? What discourse conventions would you need to observe? How would you avoid totally humiliating yourself? Yet in a sense, that’s what undergraduates are faced with when asked to choose a topic and write a paper on it. They simply don’t know enough to do a good job without careful preparation. It’s no wonder, unfamiliar as they are with the production of scholarly knowledge, with very little sense of how texts and ideas come into being, that they often believe research is merely transcription."

As Joyce Valenza states, "topical research assignments are exercises in paraphrasing."

Simply going to the library or using the Internet to find facts about a topic does little to encourage learning in an information-rich world. Real life is about problem-solving and decision-making. It is more than reporting facts.

If our students are to become truly information literate teachers must learn to pose questions that require students to find, use and share information for an authentic, meaningful purpose: to make a decision, to decide between alternatives or to answer a why, which or how question.

As we come to an understanding of how student research has traditionally been done we can begin to focus on the instructional practices that must change to encourage student inquiry that is meaningful and authentic. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education has focused on Resourced-based Learning as a foundation for authentic meaningful research. Over the past few years three inquiry-based frameworks have emerged from the resource-based learning tradition.

Selecting a Framework for Information Literacy

Inquiry-based Learning... Project-based Learning... Problem-based Learning

Often information literacy is thought of a set of skills that students must master to be information literate. As important as these skills are they cannot exist without a philosophical framework. The strands of information problem-solving cannot not be taught in isolation. First a teacher, a school or even a school division needs to decide on a framework for guiding the research; inquiry-based learning, project-based learning or problem-based learning. The next step is to select one of the many problem-solving models available and then to focus on the specific skills required to effectively find, use and share information.

In Saskatchewan the concept of information literacy has been embedded in the Resource-based Learning approach and has become entrenched in the curriculum.

Resource-based learning is a constructivist-learning environment where students become active participants in their own learning; collaborate with others to meet their learning needs, and through the use of a wide variety of resources piece together information to construct their own meaningful understanding about a subject.

Saskatchewan learning in its policy documents and in each of its curricula states that resource-based learning:

Resource-based learning while offering a constructivist approach to education has been difficult to implement and over the past few years several manifestations have appeared which provide a practical framework for student research. These include inquiry-based learning, project-based learning and problem-based learning . Each of these approaches offers teachers a framework within which to structure student learning and once the framework is chosen an information problem-solving model can be selected.

Inquiry Based Learning

girl and bubbleThe key emphasis in inquiry-based learning is on student questioning. Faced with an authentic problem students begin with asking questions about the topic being studied. Students are guided through inquiry by asking:

  • What do I already know?
  • What questions do I have?
  • How do I find out?
  • What did I learn?

These questions, gleaned from the students’ natural curiosity, guide the research process leading students to find information from which they create their own knowledge and understanding about the topic. When students find answers to their own questions, their motivation and ownership is increased. Instructors act more as coaches, guides, and facilitators who help learners arrive at their "true" questions—the things they really care about.

Middle years teachers in the Living Sky School Division are involved in a professional development working committee in which they are using division supplied laptops to create inquiry-based units. Teachers have been involved in learning about inquiry-based learning, new web-based technology tools and backwards design . Their finshed product will be a unit based on each of the four middle years ELA curricula which will be available to all teachers.

Project Based Learning

Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered teaching and learning strategy which enables students to acquire new knowledge and skills in the course of designing, planning and creating a product or performance.

Students are given a clearly stated problem that requires a specific set of conclusions or a solution that directly responds to the problem. Real world connections are made through the application and integration of content from different subject areas during the production process.

The Buck Institute for Education defines project-based learning as “ a systemic teaching method that engages students in learning knowledge and skills through an extended inquiry process structured around complex authentic questions and a carefully designed products and tasks”. Esch, (1998) outlines the production model steps which students following in project based learning:

  1. Define a purpose for the end product and identify the audience
  2. Research, design and project plan
  3. Start project, resolve problems and issues that arise in production
  4. Use or present the project
  5. Reflect on and evaluate the process and the project

The production process and the end product in project-based learning engage students in doing rather than passively receiving knowledge thus allowing them to create their own knowledge.

Problem Based Learning

The driving force behind problem-based learning is the ill-structured, messy problem matching the complexities of real life.  Problem-based learning stems from the belief that the purpose of education is to teach students to solve problems because the “non-school world (everyday life, business, hobbies, organizations) demands competent problem solvers”. 

Schools usually ask students to solve well-structured problems such as story problems, which require a finite number of concepts, rules, and principles to be applied to a constrained problem situation. In these situations students only grasp the surface elements of the problem and do not form a conceptual understanding of the problem.  Thus, they are unable to transfer their problem solving skills to other problems which are ill-structured, messy and with solutions that are not predictable and convergent The process in problem-based learning mirrors the learning process required of learners when they encounter problems in their lives and careers.

The problems students are posed often lack clarity, do not have a set formula to follow, change with new information and have many different solutions that can be reached.  To solve the problem students need to accept uncertainty, make judgments and express personal opinions and beliefs.

Technology is a key component of problem-based learning, as students must have access to a wide variety of resources and the skills to be able to find, use and share the information necessary for solving an ill-structured problem.

Information Problem-solving Models

scaffoldingProviding students with a series of steps to follow as they conduct their research and work with information provides an important scaffold for students as they solve their information problems.

It also allows them to think about thinking: to think about what they know and what they don’t know giving them the abiity to plan, implement, and evaluate strategic approaches to learning and problem solving.

Most students lack cognitive skill and awareness. An information problem-solving model allows them to engage in metacognitive activities such as self-questioning, reflection, and strategy revision. When students employ such a tool they are much better able to transfer skills they have acquired to other situations. (Kuhlthau ).

 

When a classroom teacher, school or even school division incorporates an information processing model into their resource-based learning program students and teachers have a common language to describe the learning process in which they are engaged.

Although you can follow a model that someone else developed, it makes sense to adapt these to fit your own teaching and learning style. Students can develop their own model as they reflect on their inquiry. As you explore each model, create a list of those elements that you like the best in each.

The Information Studies K-12 document from the Ontario School Library Association states that students learn best when schools adopt a consistent inquiry and research model across all grades and disciplines and from grade to grade. The OSLA has studied the wide range of literature and research in the field of information science and information studies, and has identified four stages which are common to all models:

Once a problem-solving model has been selected the individual skills within each stage or strand can be determined setting specific objectives for each grade level and subject area and thus making it easy for teachers to know what skills they have to address within their classrooms. However, in a rapidly expanding and changing information environment this is not a simple task .

An Information Literacy Curriculum


The authors of the New Literacy Wiki ask, "how does an information and technology curriculum stay relevant and meaningful in the 21st Century?"
Technology is changing swiftly and each day brings something new. It is impossible to create a scope and sequence of technology skills that will stay fresh and usable. Instead the focus must be on the thinking skills that students need to able to use the technology effectively. As is stated on the New Literacy Wiki,
Instead of asking the question "What technology skills must a students have to face the 21st century?" should we not be asking "What thinking and literacy skills must a students have to face the 21st century?" These skills are not tied to any particular software or technology-type, but rather aim to provide students with the thinking skill and thus the opportunity to succeed no matter what their futures hold.
Creating an information literacy curriculum is a difficult process but in doing so the skills within the stages of the research process: preparing, finding, using, sharing and evaluating are identified.
 
An integrated Curriculum - An integrated curriculum addresses outcomes as part of a whole so that learning is both meaningful and transferable.‘Curriculum integration does not abandon the skills and understandings that are specific to the individual Key Learning Areas, but is a means of enhancing those areas that cross Key Learning Areas.

The ability to effectively find, use and share information necessitates taking the time to determine what is known about a topic, acquire background knowledge, ask good questions and process information using graphic organizers and mind mapping programs.

Obtaining Background Knowledge

Reading, Listening, Talking, Viewing: Getting the Big Picture

prairie viewObtaining background information is a stage that is often neglected in the research process. Students have a great deal of difficulty formulating a solid research question without sufficient knowledge about a topic. This stage of the inquiry process encourages students to become experts on their topic by reading, viewing, listening and talking to people about their topic. Allowing and encouraging sufficient time in this stage of the research process will enable students to narrow and focus on one particular aspect of their topic.

The activities in this stage of the process include collecting resources, examining bibliographies, creating working bibliographies that can be referred to later and reading, viewing, listening and talking to obtain a general overview of the topic. At this time the researcher is looking for key words, dates, people and events that will allow for other connections within the research. Student should read, look for major features and aspects of their topic and write them down.

Students can begin to get an overview of their topic by using general sources such as their textbooks and encyclopedias.

As students become more knowledgeable about their topics they will find it is easier to be focused and to generate good questions that will allow them to delve into further, meaningful research.

Documenting, Organizing and categorizing information:

During this time students should be keeping track of the resources that they have found. There are excellent online citation tools that allow them to document all bibliographic data as they go along and social bookmarking tools are an excellent way to collect, organize, evaluate and share web sites as they are found.

Students can use a social bookmarking tool such as delicious to collect, annotate and save resources that they find on the web on even on the online databases. These bookmarks can be accessed from any computer, from home or school.

The Overview: Encyclopedias and Textbooks

Encyclopedia are excellent tools for gaining a general
encyclopedia understanding about a topic. They provide a broader context of the research and in general terms explain what is known about the topic. Classroom textbooks are also very good sources for general information. Especially useful in many textbooks are the bibliographies that can be used to obtain further information.

Three Useful Encyclopedias:

Finding a Focus

Sign post - Finding Focus Once a student has selected a topic and done substantial background reading they should be able to focus on one specific issue related to the topic. It should be a manageable aspect that is not too big nor too small.

If the focus is too specific than they may not find sufficient resources and if it is too large they may find themselves overwhelmed with information and not able to deal with the topic effectively.

It should be an important problem or a controversy within the topic itself. This does not mean that student should only choose major societal controversies to research but they should reflect on the issues within the field in which they are interested. For example, snow boarding… any type of musical genre… horse care and maintenance…

Controversial issues produce provocative essays, videos, blog postings, and podcasts because they are usually widely written about and they provide an opportunity to test conflicting interpretations, perspectives and values.

Tagging is an important concept in when using the read/write web. Level One Question
My research is about a broad topic. I can complete the assignment by using a general reference source such as an encyclopedia.

Example: My research is about the causes of the genocide in Rwanda.

Level Two Question
My research answers a question that helps me narrow the focus of my search. The question may mean that I need to go to various sources to gather enough information to get a reliable answer. The conclusion of the research will ask me to give a supported answer to the question.

Example: Why was Romeo Dallaire unable to inform the world about the genocide in Rwanda?

Level Three Question
My research answers a question of personal relevance. To answer this question I may need to consult not just secondary sources such as magazines, newspapers, books or the Internet, but use primary sources of information such as original surveys, interviews, or source documents.

Example: How did the atrocities of the Rwanda genocide affect Constable xxxx, of North Battleford, during and after his time as a member of the Canadian Peacekeeping forces in Rwanda?

Level Four Question
My research answers a personal question about the topic, and contains information that may be of use to decision-makers as they make policy or distribute funds. The result of my research is a well-supported conclusion that contains a call for action on the part of an organization or government body. There will be a plan to distribute this information.

Example: The Genocide Convention defines genocide as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethical, racial or religious group". Since the genocide in Rwanda ethic killings have taken place in Darfur in the Sudan. How might curricular and extra-curricular activities be utilized to motive students at NBCHS to lobby governments to take action and protect global citizens against such evil?

Concept Maps
Concept maps differ from mindmaps in that they have a specific set of criteria which are used to link concepts. They are more rigid in their structure than free flowing mindmaps but are excellent tools for students to see how the information they are collecting links together. Concept maps are graphical tools for organizing and representing knowledge. They include concepts, usually enclosed in circles or boxes of some type, and relationships between concepts indicated by a connecting line linking two concepts. Words on the line, referred to as linking words or linking phrases, specify the relationship between the two concepts. (The Theory Underlying Concept Maps and How to Construct Them )

Finding Information

little boy looking around a treeIn this stage of the problem-solving process the researcher locates the resources that contain the answers to the research questions posed during the preparation or planning stage. However, in a technology and information-rich world the temptation is to accept the first three hits on google and not explore the wealth of available resources.

Teachers tend to overestimate students ability to locate appropriate resources often intimidated by their apparent ease and understanding of how to use the technology.

It is important that at this stage teachers are aware of the types of resources that tend to appear in the first three hits of a google search -- e.g. Wikipedia and be aware of what they are and how they are created. Students must use sophisticated analytical and critical thinking skills to structure their search and to select relevant, authoritative and credible resources.

As David Warlick says,

So one of the oldies requested was “Finding It on the Net: Being a Digital Detective.” The last time I’d taught that one, I was still introducing folks to Google and boolean searching. But today, it involves so much more. Not just finding the evidence, as a digital detective, but also witnesses. So I included a discussion about blogs and wikis, and using Technorati and Google Blog search to locate and select experts in a given field, and to use BlogPulse to map the frequency of specific conversations. We also looked at some examples of using wikis to tap into the collective knowledge of communities.

When it came to the digital detective seeking evidence, I did an old demo, illustrating a process-approach to conducting searches. I call it SEARCH, which is an acronym for the process. We also discussed the Wikipedia and other social content sites and their effectiveness as a reliable source. This discussion, alas, continues.

Finally, I demo’ed RSS, as a tool for not just finding information, but for training information to find you. So much more to finding information today.

In January 2008 Living Sky School Division began subscribing to Discovery Education Streaming a digital video-on-demand and online teaching service to help improve students' retention and test scores that is aligned to provincial curriculum standards.
The Discovery Education Streaming Video Site is extremely informative but it also absolutely enhances students’ learning. Today I showed the video, Cells: The Basic Units of Life. It not only adequately covered most of the material in our Science Grade 7 core unit, Basics of Life, but the students really did enjoy the presentation. I’ve looked at many of the videos on this site, and can easily see how they can be effectively utilized to get students energized and engaged in hands-on learning experiences. Video is the perfect medium for students who are auditory or visual learners.

This website is very full of interesting things, and the movie we watched today was outstanding. It gave us great details of everything about our unit, and it is a great website to learn from. Thank you very much; I know my whole class will enjoy this website just as much as me.

Quintura - a visual search engine is one of the best children's search engines to be found. It is a particularily useful tools for students to use when they begin their research. Searching the Invisble Web

face behind spider web eyes closedThe "visible web" is what you see in the results pages from general web search engines. It's also what you see in almost all subject directories. The "invisible web" is what you cannot retrieve ("see") in the search results and other links contained in these types of tools. The invisible web is also referred to as the Deep Web .

There are many Web pages that can't be indexed, or information that's available via the Web but isn't accessible by the search engines. This is the stuff of the Invisible Web.Why can't some pages be indexed? The most basic reason is that there are no links pointing to a page that a search engine spider canfollow. Or, a page may be made up of data types that search engines don't index - graphics, CGI scripts, Macromedia flash or PDF files, for example.

But the biggest part of the Invisible Web is made up of information stored in databases. When an indexing spider comes across a database, it's as if it has run smack into the entrance of a massive library with securely bolted doors. Spiders can record the library's address, but can tell you nothing about the books, magazines or other documents it contains. From The Invisible Web by Chris Sherman.

Visual Search Engines

Standard search engines are great for finding individual Web pages to answer specific questions. But their results lists do not help you to understand a field in general. A visual search engine clusters results, and in doing so gives you a better overview of a field. These are useful tools that can be used to help students narrow and focus their searches.

  • VisuWords - online graphical dictionary — Look up words to find their meanings and associations with other words and concepts. Produce diagrams reminiscent of a neural net. Learn how words associate.

After you enter your search query, you are presented with a tag cloud of words that looks like a just-finished Scrabble game. Moving your cursor to the word that most closely matches what you are looking for causes the to cloud to rearrange around that term. You glide though the Internet this way, until you have ’steered’ yourself to the best results; even if its something you did not know was there when you began your search.

There are other visual search tools including searchChrystal , Grokker , Clusty and KartOO - the following articles provide a review and a comparison of each.

My favourite of the search engines reviewed is Quintera - the adult search engine. It was the least confusing to view and to follow. I quite like the way it which it displayed the results for the term on which I hovered almost immediately on the right hand side of the page.

Training Information to Find You

Information today exists in such quantities that students need to learn the many tools that faciliate information arriving on their desktops rather than continually searching Google. Tools such as Google Alerts, RSS and SocialBookmarking can faciliate instantaneous access to pertinent information.

At this stage of the research process students are critically and analytically working with the information they have found. This stage requires a great deal of teacher support, modeling and scaffolding, as this is a very frustrating stage for students. Without critical supports for students at this stage they will resort to copying and pasting especially when they encounter information that is beyond their reading comprehension level.

During this phase of the information problem-solving process students need the skills to:

  • Evaluate Information
  • Analyze and synthesize information
  • Organize information
  • Use information ethically and safely

At this stage of the research process students have progressed to working with the information found within the resources they located in the previous stage but they still continue to use many of the tools and skills used at previous stages of the process such as, graphic organizers , social bookmarking and research planners .

A podcast (10:36 minutes) with Joyce Valenza points to key tips and ideas about what to look for when using blogs for research.

In Joyce Valenza on Evaluating Blogs Joyce says,

Blogs are essentially primary sources and can provide lively insights and perspectives not documented by traditional sources. They compare in some ways to a traditional interview, with the speaker controlling the questions. Ripe for essays and debate, blogs present not only the traditional two sides of an issue, but the potentially thousands of takes. And those takes take less time to appear than documents forced through the traditional publishing or peer review process. How to recognize an email hoax

The following five scenarios describe most email hoaxes:

  • A warning of a new virus that you should send on to everyone you know.
  • A warning of a scam that you should send on to everyone you know.
  • A petition to help the needy or some cause that wants you to foward it on to those who might be interested.
  • A get-rich-quick scheme that claims if you forward on the message you'll receive money for each time it's forwarded.
  • A claim that for each email sent someone in need will be helped by another organization.

Good email practices include:

  • don't open files from strangers or files that you aren't
  • expecting, don't give out your email or IM address or personal
  • information, don't reply to spam,
  • delete junk e-mails messages without opening them,
  • don't forward chain e-mail messages,
  • don't buy things advertised through email.

The Cost of Copyright Confusion for Media Literacy (pdf - 17 pages)

From the Executive Summary:

The fundamental goals of media literacy education—to cultivate critical thinking about media and its role in culture and society and to strengthen creative communication skills—are compromised by unnecessary copyright restrictions and lack of understanding about copyright law, as interviews with dozens of teachers and makers of media literacy curriculum materials showed.

The Generational Divide in Copyright Morality - David Pogue of the New York Times describes a discussion on copyright morality with college students:

Recently, however, I spoke at a college. It was the first time I’d ever addressed an audience of 100 percent young people. And the demonstration bombed.

In an auditorium of 500, no matter how far my questions went down that garden path, maybe two hands went up. I just could not find a spot on the spectrum that would trigger these kids’ morality alarm. They listened to each example, looking at me like I was nuts.

Finally, with mock exasperation, I said, “O.K., let’s try one that’s a little less complicated: You want a movie or an album. You don’t want to pay for it. So you download it.”

There it was: the bald-faced, worst-case example, without any nuance or mitigating factors whatsoever.

“Who thinks that might be wrong?”

 Doug Johnson in his post, Paradox Land , makes some recommendations for changing the focus of how we teach about copyright and intelletual property because "The mindset that “if we don’t know for sure, don’t do it” does not fit the needs of either students or their teachers. Changes I am thinking about recommending include:

  1. Changing the focus of copyright instruction from what is forbidden to what is permitted.
  2. When there is doubt, err on the side of the user. (Are we being "hyper-compliant"?)
  3. Ask the higher ethical questions when the law seems to make little sense. (Look where it got Socrates. Well, yeah, there was that hemlock bit...)
  4. Teach copyright from the point of view of the producer, as well as the consumer. (Does having others using your work without authorization or remuneration change your perception of intellectual property issues?)

Citation Tools and Generators

I don't do windows, I don't do floors and I don't do bibliographies!

I have a very strong bias against the expectation that students will create bibliographies because I don't always understand the rationale behind this requirement. Bibliographies are simply a list of resources consulted or used in the process of research. They remain unconnected to the finished product. When asked teachers respond by saying that they require bibliographies to prevent plagairism. Hmmm... in my experience this has never worked.

I would like to say "ban bibliographies" much the same way Joyce Valenza says we should ban "topical research". However, that is not to say that I don't believe that students should be held accountable for the resources that they use to find information. But instead of the focus on bibliographies the focus should be on the citations that students use to support their point of view. This requires students to search for the experts and to find the best possible information. The Works Cited page (MLA) or the Reference page (APA) merely becomes the full documentation of the items they have cited within their product.

There are several good sites that provide teachers and students with background, overviews and tutorials on citing and proper formating for works cited and reference pages. I am able to mark items during my search in the databases or in the card catalog and then later export to RefWorks, which creates a completely formatted and alphabetized reference page for me. Too Cool! There is even an accompanying program which I can use toBibMe logo automatically insert the in-text citation into my paper. Wow! This makes me wonder about how extensively we need to teach students about the correct formatting of a bibliography page. Why not just use a citation generator - there are several available.

When feature and non-feature videos or DVDs are played in a "domestic" setting, such as a home, only a home-use license is required. However, when a non-feature video or DVD is shown in a "public" setting, such as a school, then a public performance license is necessitated. When ordering a non-feature video or DVD for use in a school setting, your invoice to the supplier should specify that you are acquiring public performance rights to use this item in a school setting.


Public Performance Rights Licensing for Feature Films

In order to show feature films legally in a classroom, a school or school division must acquire a public performance rights license.

Living Sky School Divison has purchased the following licensing for all schools within the division:

Audio Ciné Films

  • Represents Alliance Atlantis, Walt Disney Pictures, Universal Studios, MGM Studios, United Artists, Nickelodeon, Miramax, Pixar, and more.
  • License covers video from rental stores and public libraries, and purchased (in Canada) home-use video/DVD.
  • The ACF license does not cover VHS/DVD purchased from the USA. Video/DVD can be purchased from Canadian subsidiaries, i.e. Blockbuster.ca or Amazon.ca, as long as the studio is included in the ACF license.

Visual Education Centre (VEC) / Criterion Pictures

  • Represents Warner Brothers, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Lions Gate, Sony Pictures, Dreamworks, Paramount Pictures and more.
  • Covers video/DVD from rental stores and public libraries, purchased (in Canada) home use video/DVD and video/DVD borrowed from friends or students. The key element is that the video/DVD is legally manufactured, which excludes all self-produced video/DVD.
  • Criterion accepts VHS/DVD purchased from the USA as long as the studio is included in the Criterion license.

Collaborating, Writing, Linking: Using Wikis to Tell Stories Online : a lesson from Read Write Think

Lesson Overview:

When students read online, they engage with text differently. Clicking on links and images for more information easily takes them down unexpected paths, links to e-mail addresses allow them to interact with authors, and wikis allow them to make changes to published text. This lesson, which can also be used in high school classrooms, has students create stories that reflect this kind of reading. Students begin by reading untraditional books that use fragmented storylines, multiple perspectives, and unresolved plots. They apply these same types of strategies to their own writing, which they then publish using wiki technology. In doing so, students practice important literacy skills including searching for information, integrating images into text, and creating storylines that are reflective of the new types of reading found on the Internet.

Wikified class notes

Wikis, it turns out, are very good at establishing this sort of document. Someone starts by uploading their notes, and subsequent students can expand, revise, delete, re-arrange, or otherwise improve the version, until it reflects something like consensus about the day’s class. Further, the page can be updated throughout the semester, as later class periods interact with earlier ones.
